GasanMamo Insurance Illuminates the Historic White Tower in Mellieħa

GasanMamo Insurance is proud to announce its sponsorship of the newly installed lighting system at the iconic White Tower in Aħrax, Mellieħa. This initiative was carried out in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa and the Mellieħa Local Council, to enhance the visibility and preservation of one of Malta’s most treasured landmarks.

A Sustainable Lighting Project

The project to illuminate the White Tower was carefully designed to balance heritage preservation and environmental sustainability. The lighting installation features custom-made low-level floodlights, which illuminate the historic ditch surrounding the tower while protecting the night sky and local biodiversity. To further enhance safety and security, three-phase electricity was introduced, along with CCTV cameras.

A Historic Sunset Ceremony

On Wednesday 5th February 2025, the lighting system was officially switched on during a sunset ceremony overlooking the Comino Channel. The event was attended by representatives from Din l-Art Ħelwa, GasanMamo Insurance, and the Mellieħa Local Council.

Patrick Calleja, Executive President of Din l-Art Ħelwa, remarked, “As the national trust for Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa recognized the need to raise awareness about this wonderfully restored site without compromising the surrounding natural habitat. Thanks to the generous support of GasanMamo Insurance, this vision has become a reality.”

Julian Mamo, Managing Director of GasanMamo Insurance, added, “We are honored to contribute to the preservation of Malta’s cultural heritage. The White Tower is a symbol of our history, and we are committed to ensuring it remains accessible and protected for future generations.”

The White Tower: A Rich History

Built in 1656, the White Tower was one of 13 coastal watchtowers constructed by Grand Master Martin de Redin during the rule of the Order of St. John. It was later fortified in 1716 with a semi-circular battery and a surrounding ditch. Over the years, the tower has served various purposes, including a British Naval Hydrophones Training Station.

In recent decades, the White Tower fell into disrepair until Din l-Art Ħelwa, in collaboration with the Mellieħa Local Council, undertook its restoration. Today, the tower stands as a testament to Malta’s history, offering educational experiences through its interactive visitors’ center, which features documentaries and exhibits about Malta’s marine biodiversity and cultural heritage.

A Hub for Education and Community

The White Tower is now a popular destination for visitors, students, and organizations. Its conference room hosts team activities, workshops, and lectures, while the tower’s scenic location overlooking Malta’s coastline makes it a must-visit site for locals and tourists alike.
